Information technology is the study of how specialists design, support, implement and develop systems that are computerized for information storage, software and hardware. Interestingly, it deals with the use of electronics and the creation of software and other computer applications that help to protect, store, convert, transmit and get back information that is vital and therefore important. Modern technology is growing and evolving so that an Information Technology manager has the mantle of trying to keep abreast of new aspects. His function and role varies from company to company but what remains constant is that he loves a challenge in troubleshooting.
Who is an IT manager? Well, professionals in this field, perform a number of activities. One of the major roles is the installation of software applications and the creation of software designs. Software applications and design is a problem-solving process that seeks to find relevant software solutions. For example, at Credit Unions in the Caribbean, a company called Microsoft Design Solutions, has created a software that helps in the technological data storage and retrieval process. This software is called Qumis and it is a generic software developed for easy accounting practices and the members information. When, the Credit Union’s consulted about their challenges, the purpose and specifications of the software, developers then developed a plan for a solution. Interestingly, software engineers believe that A software design may be platform-independent or platform-specific, depending on the availability of the technology called for by the design.
An IT manager, will be responsible to overseer and perhaps train its employees in data management practices. It involves looking at unique ways and disciplines of managing data that is perceived to be important. One resource says that it may involve the execution of policies, practices and procedures needed to properly manage data cycles for a company. The IT manager should be aware, that if employees within the department are not cognizant of data management issues and practices, then it is important to provide sufficient training for them. Training will be needed in areas such as data analysis, database management system, data modeling, database administration, data warehousing, data movement, data maintenance, data mining, data quality assurance, data security, meta-data management (data repositories, and their management) and data architecture.
An IT Manager should be versed in computer networking practices. Networking really looks at communication between computer systems and devices. It is heavily rooted in the discipline of engineering, so that it might be wise that the IT manager is academically fit and has considerable experience in the field. Considered as a sub discipline, an IT manager needs to be aware of routers, networks, and routing protocols. Computer networks rely heavily upon the theoretical and practical application of these scientific and engineering disciplines. Networks are always for the exchange of data because the computers are interconnected; so that businesses may use this as a means of open communication. There are instances however, that IT managers and personnel might be required to interconnect departmentally so that managers can keep abreast of work down and also it is an easy means of information retrieval.
Hard but worthy of a try, IT managers also engineer the installation of new software and computer systems. Hardware and software integration are broad areas in computer science and electrical engineering. The role of the manager here is to ensure that systems are up and running. It is a technical aspect that warrants knowledge of firmware development, circuit design and other system-level design and integration. Troubleshooting problems that may arise with systems at the office and IT personnel should either be able to outsource the job or provide technical support themselves.
Systems management and administration is another important function of an IT manager. When we speak of systems management it refers to administration and computer distribution. It is the area of telecommunications that focuses on: hardware inventories, server availability monitoring and metrics, software inventory and installation anti-virus and anti-malware management, user’s activities monitoring, capacity monitoring, security management, storage management, network capacity and utilization monitoring. The activities in system management are great, so that the IT manager may want to delegate according to an individual’s skill and capabilities. Systems administrators maintain and operate computer networks and systems, providing server support, project management, programming and other consultant issues.
An IT manager must demonstrate a blend of technical skills and responsibility. As he is responsible for producing, manipulating, storing, communicating, and disseminate information so that there is efficiency in an organization.
