Student number: 1211100 | Abuhmaid, Yousef | Question one Explain and evaluate the role of the client, architect, other design professionals and site manager in enabling and maintaining a safe working environment on a construction project. Construction sites are dangerous places. Statistics show that, on average, a person is killed every four days and hundreds are injured.
Members such as clients, architects, design professionals and site managers on construction sites; they have to produce risk assessments that identify potential hazards and method statements that set out how jobs are to be done properly and safely. Client: A client is a group or individual who is having construction project or building work carried out, unless they are a domestic client. A domestic client is someone who lives, will live, or use the construction for any purposes such as commercial.
Clients have big influences on construction sites safety for few reasons such as the funds, the period of time the client has given and other resources provided by the client, moreover, the client manages the project team and decides who does what and the plan for their work. Clients must take measures before a construction starts for example ensure that the projects team works effectively together, suitable managements and method statements for the project, provide enough time and funds, furthermore, provide information.
Architects and design professionals: Designer duties apply to any business that prepares or modifies a design for a particular structure. Architects, civil and structural engineers, building surveyors, landscape architects, other consultants, manufacturers and design practices are considered as design professionals Designers are in a unique position to reduce the risks that arise during construction work. Designs develop from initial concepts through to a detailed specification.
At each stage, designers from all disciplines can make a significant contribution by pointing out and reducing risks and hazards through the design, furthermore, provide information about future risks and how to avoid them. Site manager: In the construction industry, site managers, often referred to as construction managers, or site agents are responsible for the daily o site running of a construction project. Site managers are required to manage any delays or problems encountered on-site during a construction project and keeping the public and workers on site safe.
Site managers should produce a suitable plan that is managed, monitored and a safe plan, in addition they have to enforce rules for the project to prevent cases like unauthorised access to the site and many other. Moreover, it’s their job to make sure that all the workers have been trained and provided with suitable health and safety induction. In conclusion, Construction sites are dangerous places, with countless hazards and dangers present that can cause illness, injury or death to a site worker.
The increasing level of health and safety legislation over the past two or three decades has placed a great level of responsibility on site managers, clients, and designers to ensure that the construction site is as safe as it can possibly be for those who work on it. Question two Explain and analyse the impact of different management styles and techniques on the performance of construction site team. Managers deal with their employees in different ways.
Some are strict with their staff and like to be in complete control, whilst others are more relaxed and allow workers the freedom to run their own working lives, however, the main role of a manager is that managers are hired to plan and control. They should be able to use formal methods of communication to receive information, and to pass on orders and instruction to their workers to meet the objectives. There are many different types of management styles but the three main ones are: autocratic, paternalistic and democratic.
Below I’m going to explain these three different management styles and their impacts on the construction site team. Autocratic: Autocratic (or authoritarian) managers, This is often referred to as an authoritarian leadership style, managers that are autocratic tend to make all the important decisions and delegate very little responsibility down to their workers, furthermore, they do not trust workers and simply give orders which is considered as a (one-way communication).
This approach has limitations, however it can be effective in situations where quick decisions are needed on site (e. g. in a time of crises or an accident on construction site) and when controlling large numbers of low skilled workers which is very common nowadays. On the other hand this management style can cause much resentment and frustration amongst the workforce. Democratic: A democratic style of management is the opposite of autocratic it’s based on putting trust in employees and encouraging them to make decisions or in other words empowering the workers.
They will give to them the power to do tasks and listen to their opinions. This type of management requires good two-way communication and often involves democratic discussion groups, which can offer useful suggestions and ideas. This can lead to increased levels of morale and motivation amongst the workforce. However, one of the criticisms of this style is that it can take longer to reach a decision. This involves managers and leaders taking into account the views of the workforce before implementing any new system.
Paternalistic: Paternalistic is fairly autocratic in its approach in managing workers, however, managers give more attention to the social needs and views of their workers and such factors are taking into account when a decision is made. Managers are interested in how happy workers feel therefore workers are consulted before making a decision and listen to their feedback or opinions. The manager will however make the final decisions which will be the most suitable for both the workers and for the construction project.
This style of management is more motivating since it’s a two-way communication and the workers feel their social needs are being met, on the other hand, it slows down decision making and it’s still quite a dictatorial or in other words autocratic. In summary, Leaders must plan, motivate and control, but how they best do this is a question of circumstance. In my opinion the leadership style used depends on the type of firm, different types of leaderships are used in different situations, for example the management style will be different on a construction site than a land surveying company.
